제 꾀에 넘어간 당나귀

 

등에 짐을 실어 나르는 당나귀가 있었어요. 어느 날 무거운 소금 자루를 등에 지고 개울을 건너다 그만 물속에 풍덩 빠지고 말았어요.

 

주인은 힘껏 당나귀를 끌어올려 겨우 물 밖으로 나왔지요. 그런데 주인이 화를 내며 당나귀 등을 마구 내리쳤어요.

 

"이놈의 당나귀야! 내 소금이 모두 녹아버렸잖아!"

 

그제야 무거웠던 짐이 가벼워진 것을 알았어요.

 

"아하, 물속에 들어갔다 나오면 짐이 가벼워지는구나."

 

며칠 뒤 당나귀는 솜을 짊어지고 시장에 가게 되었어요. 숨은 가벼워서 당나귀는 콧노래를 부르며 걸어갔어요.

 

지난번 개울에 다다르자 당나귀는 생각했어요.

 

"이번에도 강물에 빠지고 나면 새털처럼 가벼워지겠지?"

 

당나귀는 일부러 물에 빠지고 말았어요.

 

그런데 이상한 일이 생겼어요. 당나귀는 휘청거리며 일어설 수 없었어요. 왜 그럴까요? 숨이 물을 잔뜩 먹어 돌덩어리보다 더 무거워졌기 때문이에요.

 

"아이고, 무거워. 내 꾀에 내가 속다니...!"

 

The Donkey was deceived by his own trick

 

There was a donkey carrying a load on his back. One day, the donkey was crossing a stream with a heavy bag of salt on his back, and he fell into the water.

The owner pulled the donkey out of the water. But the owner was angry and hit the donkey.

 

"How stupid are you! My salt has melted away!"

 

Only then did the donkey find that the bag became lighter.

 

"Ah, it will get lighter when I go into and out of the water."

 

 

A few days later, the donkey went to the market carrying cotton. The cotton was light, so the donkey walked while humming. When he reached the stream he crossed last time, one thought came to him.

 

"Once again in the stream, it will be as lighter as a feather, if I get into the water."

 

The donkey fell into the water on purpose. But something strange happened.

The donkey could not stand up because the cotton soaked in water became heavier than stone.

 

“Oh, it's heavy! I've been fooled by my tricks.”

 

 

 

 

 

 

당나귀와 귀뚜라미

 

가뭄이 되자 귀뚜라미가 노래를 부르고 있어요. 당나귀는 귀뚜라미의 노랫소리를 아주 좋아졌어요.

 

‘나도 귀뚜라미처럼 멋진 목소리를 갖고 싶어’

 

부러운 마음에 당나귀는 귀뚜라미를 찾아가 물어보았어요.

 

“너는 무엇을 먹고서 이렇게 멋진 목소리를 가졌니?”

 

귀뚜라미가 대답했어요.

 

"나는 물밑에 있는 이슬만 먹고 산단다."

 

당나귀는 그날부터 풀은 먹지 않고 이슬만 먹었어요.

 

‘나도 곧 귀뚜라미처럼 아름다운 목소리로 노래를 부를 수 있겠지?’

 

이슬만 먹은 당나귀는 하루하루 여위어 갔어요.

하지만 여전히 풀잎에 맺힌 이슬만 먹었어요. 며칠이 지나자 당나귀는 너무 배가 고파 그만 쓰러지고 말았답니다.

 

The Donkey and the Cricket

 

In Autumn, a cricket was singing. The donkey loved the sound of cricket.

 

"I want to have a nice voice like a cricket."

 

Having an envious heart, the donkey asked the cricket,

 

"What do you eat to have such a wonderful voice?"

 

The cricket replied,

 

"I eat only dew on the grass leaves."

 

The donkey did not eat grass from that day but ate only dew.

 

"I will soon be able to sing with a voice as beautiful as a cricket, right?"

 

The donkey ate only dew every day and he became thinner and thinner. After a few days, the donkey was so hungry that he fell down.
